Historic Views of The Year 1979

European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held in Copenhagen. Nadia Comaneci from Romania won three gold and one bronze medal. Romania became best nation, followed by the Soviet Union and East Germany.

These are some happenings in 1979:

  • Vietnamese forces invaded Cambodia and ended Pol Pot's terror rule.
  • The Shah of Iran was ousted and Iran became Muslim republic with Ayatollah Khomeini as spiritual leader. Hundreds were executed, and American embassy staff held hostage.
  • The ship Berge Vanga with 40 men aboard disappeared without a trace (see also 1976).
  • Saddam Hussein became president of Iraq.
  • Soviet invaded Afghanistan - it was the beginning of a long war that we have not seen the end of yet.
  • Military forces from Tanzania removed Ugandan President Idi Amin.
  • Margaret Thatcher became prime minister in Britain.
  • Alta development was postponed after large demonstrations and civil disobedience.
  • Eric Heiden took four gold at the World Championships at Bislett and Gretel Waitz won the New York Marathon.
  • Tour of Western Norway - a tradition.
