Historic Views of The Year 1984

Grorud Taekwondo club was founded by Grandmaster Beom Jhoo Lee. The club was established in the then Grorud Squash Centre and the football club Tamil Sangam was founded on Stovner.
Tom Pettersen has run Høybråten hairdresser (Høybråten herrefrisør) since 1984 and is one of few companies mentioned in the historical guide "Discover Groruddalen" launched by Erik Solheim.

These are some important happenings in 1984:

  • The year started with Vinmonopolet (liquor store) introduced Saturday closed outlets, which the Parliament ended before year end.
  • Bureau Chief of the Foreign Ministry, Arne Treholt was arrested for espionage for the Soviet Union. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • Ronald Reagan was re-elected as US President.
  • Indian Prime Minister Indira Ghandi was killed by own security guards.
  • The Parliament opened for local radio and television via cable.
  • Tobacco packages got health warnings.
  • Tikronen (10 NOK) became coin.
  • Japp Bank more than any - Oslobanken - was created. The first new bank in 36 years.
  • NRK P2 officially opened in Trondheim.
  • Head on "The Little Mermaid" in Copenhagen was sawed off.
  • Johnny Weissmuller, the most famous Tarzan actor and Olympic champion in swimming died.
  • A fishing boat got a Soviet submarine in the trawl off Karmøy in Rogaland.
