Historic Views of The Year 1986

In 1986 it was sold incredible 210,465 new cars in Norway. Ford sold the most cars in a calendar month, with 3512 new registrations in May. In this record month it was registered 24,073 new cars.

These are some major events in 1986:

  • Olof Palme, Scandinavia's most famous politician, was killed in Stockholm.
  • A fire in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in spreading radioactivity in the atmosphere. This also affected parts of Norway. The amount of radioactivity was 200 times more than the Hiroshima bomb.
  • Space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff - all aboard died.
  • 16 soldiers died in landslides in Vassdalen. They were sent into the area despite warnings.
  • Caledonian Hotel in Kristiansand was burning - 14 lost their lives.
  • Cabinet Questions from the Progress Party led to Willoch government falls and Gro Harlem Brundtland was once again prime minister.
  • Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) was opened. Oslo Ø (Oslo East) and Oslo V (Oslo West) is history.
  • Åse Kleveland led the international final in Eurovision Song Contest from Bergen.
  • Lotto introduced.
