Historic Views of The Year 1990

Color Line is a Norwegian ferry company, owned by Color Group ASA, which mainly operates combined passenger / car ferries from Norway to Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The company was established in 1990 and has in recent years taken over companies and lines that can pull its history back to 1872, when a ferry connection between Kristiansand and Frederikshavn in Denmark was started.

These are some of the events in 1990:

  • Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison.
  • The Norwegian Bank (Den Norske Bank - DNB) was formed when The Norwegian Credit Bank and Bergen Bank merged.
  • Africa's last colony, Namibia, gained independence.
  • 159 killed in fire at "Scandinavian Star".
  • Boris Yeltsin became president of Russia.
  • Parliament adopted women's inheritance rights to the Norwegian throne.
  • Russia proclaimed itself an independent republic.
  • Vaclav Havel became Czechoslovakia's first elected president.
  • Ukraine declared itself independent.
  • Iraq attacks Kuwait and Saddam Hussein declared that Iraq had annexed Kuwait.
  • Government Syse resigned and Gro Harlem Brundtland became the new prime minister. (Yes, again).
  • Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister of England, John Major followed.
  • Lech Walesa became president of Poland.
  • Carsten Byhring, possibly best known as "Kjell" in the Olsen gang (Olsenbanden), died.
  • Roger moved to Grimstad.
