Historic Views of The Year 1993

"Fakkel Man" in Oyer Municipality is a figure formed in a logging field and has the shape of a man running with a flare. Formation on the west side of the valley and is easily visible from Hafjell on the east side of the valley. It was made in connection with the Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994.

These are some noteworthies in 1993:

  • EU introduced the "four freedoms", the free flow of goods, services, capital and labor between member states.
  • Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
  • Rosemarie Köhn became bishop.
  • Statoil made one of Norway's largest oil discoveries off the Helgeland.
  • Partnership Act was adopted.
  • Norway beat England 2-0 in football (however, it had happened before).
  • 36 were killed in an arson in Turkey when Muslims burned the hotel where a translator of "The Satanic Verses" stayed. Connected to the same case became William Nygård get shot and severely injured in an assassination in Oslo.
  • "Oslo Agreement" was signed.
  • Three Iranians hijacked a Russian aircraft and forced it to Gardermoen.
  • Drammen theater was completely destroyed in an arson.
  • The Swedish TV celebrity, especially known from "Hylands Hörna", Lennart Hyland died.
  • The American musician Frank Zappa died.
  • Audrey Hepburn, Belgian born actress and dancer, died.
